Our Labelling System around the shop

Green label goods
The green is fairly self-explanatory. As in the past, it stands for certified organic -nothing more, nothing less.

Blue label good
The blue needs a little more explanation, as does the phrase ‘chosen by Riverford’. The blue labels were always a bit of a fudge. An additive free pork pie, might not have additives but you can be sure the pork will have been fed on some additives and that the wheat in the pastry will have been sprayed. That is why organic means so much. Blue stands for ‘significantly different from the industrial norm’. It could be unsprayed, additive free, fair trade, hand made, very local, or made by a business with charitable status.

Chosen by Riverford
‘Chosen by Riverford’ means just that. We reject an enormous amount of products on grounds of ethos as well as quality but the things we sell are there for positive reasons. Not only do we think they are good but they are also grown or produced in a manner that we approve of. Not every business can be organic but that doesn’t mean it is bad.

White label goods
The white/cream labels are for products that we cannot vouch for. That doesn’t mean they taste bad, just that there is nothing about them that lifts them above the norm.

Riverford Farm Shop Fresh Produce
autumn vegetables

At Riverford Farm Shop we are committed to providing fresh, unadulterated food, produced without damaging the environment, selling certifiably organic and local products wherever possible. Also, we aim to provide food at prices affordable by customers with a real interest in good, healthy food.

If something is certified 'organic', so much the better - but it must also satisfy other criteria. Often the magic word ‘organic’ is not enough. For example we try not to sell over processed, organic food, but we do sell non-organic, GM and additive free pork and local, conventional vegetables from Kitley Pick Your Own.

'Local' has become another of those magic words. In an ideal world, food would be locally grown, locally processed, locally sold and locally consumed. However, purists do accept that with some foods the principle of 'local food' can only require that the processing of the food should be as close to source as possible. It seems quite obvious that we cannot grow bananas and coca beans in Devon. So, while most of our meat and vegetable suppliers are local, selling locally reared meat and locally grown crops, especially vegetable suppliers, may sometimes have to import goods from other regions.

Enough said. Click on any one of the following categories for more information about those who supply us with our excellent fresh produce.

fresh vegetables fresh salad & herbs fresh fruit
local cheese local eggs & honey local plants and flowers

Though you will find the information in each of these categories relates to regular suppliers, those visiting our shops will also find produce from people local to the shop who may have a bumper crop of unsprayed apples, or a garden full of flowers to dispose of. If the produce is good we will be interested in adding it to our fresh produce section.
